Artist Statement

A spring break trip to Zion National Park rekindled an interest in the lines forms of the canyon walls. I studied geology and I used to rock climb, so the forms were not new to me, but I hadn’t tried emulating those surfaces in my ceramic work.

This piece comes from a desire to explore the cracks, ledges and over hangs of big rock walls. The vase was fired in a wood kiln with glaze only on the inside. This lets us see the raw clay interact with the fire and ash from the kiln. Seemed like an appropriate process to me.
