Artist Statement

“Untitled” began as an exploration of the dense, layered composition of Claude Monet’s Chrysanthemums. Rather than recreating the painting in its original medium, I was interested in translating its visual language into crochet, using stitches in much the same way Monet used brushstrokes.

By reimagining an iconic work of fine art through fiber, I hope to challenge the traditional distinction between craft and fine art. Crochet is often viewed primarily as a domestic craft, yet it demands the same patience, precision, and artistic intention as painting. Through this piece, I wanted to demonstrate that fiber is capable of carrying the same visual complexity and expressive power as more traditionally celebrated artistic mediums.

Constructed from secondhand acrylic yarn and reclaimed sequins, glass, and plastic beads, the work also reflects my commitment to sustainability by giving discarded materials a new life. I hope viewers take the time to look closely, discovering the intricate textures and details that emerge with careful observation. Ultimately, this piece invites reconsideration—not only of a familiar masterpiece, but also of the artistic possibilities and value of crochet itself.
