Artist Statement

Adaline Cornell is an artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota, primarily working in ceramics. Attending Gustavus Adolphus College in the fall, she is majoring in Psychology and Studio Arts.

In my work, I focus on the idea of union with the natural world rather than ownership and our impact on the environment.  These pieces illustrate the sometimes harrowing truth of our relationship with nature and the disturbing reality that our destructive practices affect us too.

Carrion

This piece is hand-built with clay and colored using chalk pastel. The sparrow is small and familiar, a bird we often overlook. It represents a feeling beyond our instinctive grief for each other, and rather animals we typically feel little to no grief for. Often, animals are trophies for achievement, devaluing their lives. This piece exists in that space of detachment, giving value to the lives we ignore. Who decides which lives are worthy of mourning?
